(2008-2009)
Following are the Programs PTA plans to offer for the 2008-2009 school year. Our goal is to offer our families many activities throughout the school year. As you will see, many of these Programs / Events are still OPEN. If you are interested in organizing / chairing an open position, please contact Carolyn Beckwith (PTA President) at beckwith@san.rr.com for more information.
Book Fair – The Book Fair happens twice a year (Fall & Spring). The library is transformed into a magical book store filled with books and other items just for kids. Students visit the fair during school hours to browse and purchase items. Parents can also use this as an opportunity to purchase gifts for the holidays, special occasions or the chance to add a book to their child’s classroom library. (Proceeds from the book fair are used to help support new books for our school library.)

Character
Counts Coaches –
This volunteer based program allows every child to explore the 6 Character
Counts pillars. The program will support teachers in their efforts to
integrate Character Education into the curriculum. Character Coachers will be
given training and support throughout the year.
Don't forget to wear your pillar color on Community gathering days.

Family Fun Night (Movie Nights) – Family Fun Night is a fun night for the whole family. PTA sponsors the showing of a newly released “G” rated movie, just bring your chairs/blankets and enjoy the show.

Family Fun Night (February Dance) – The evening dance is a wonderful opportunity to spend fun quality time with your family. Enjoy great music and dancing, games, refreshments and keepsake photos.

Family Fun Night (Astronomy Night) – Come enjoy an evening under the stars with family and friends. We’ll be bringing in large telescopes, have some games for the kids and a special dessert just for you!

Family Fun Night (Art Night) – This is a NEW event we’d like to bring to Chaparral...a free event that will be led by Art Corps instructors. Enjoy an art lesson and bring out the inner artist in you (even if you’re just a wanna-be artist)! PTA will provide all materials.

Family Fun Night (Game Night) – This is a NEW event we’d like to bring to Chaparral...EVERYONE loves games! This is a free event. Come on all you BINGO enthusiasts!

Family Fun Night (Spellman Magic) – Steve Spellman and his Spellman Magic Spectacular will be joining us for an amazing evening. This will be a great family event that you don't want to miss!

Family Portrait Night – Family Portrait Night is a great way to capture your family’s portrait, with the convenience of photographers either at school or a preplanned outdoor location. Pictures are available before the holidays, and some of the money is given back to the school!

Fitness Club – Available to all students in 1st through 5th grade, this program encourages fitness and personal goal achievement. During their lunch recess, students may walk or jog laps around the school track. Laps are tallied throughout the year and students who reach various levels of achievement receive awards at a special ceremony in June.

Fun Run – The Fun Run is a day of “fun in the sun” in either the 1K or 5K runs. The course begins at the front of Chaparral and winds down Valle Verde Road to the winery and back again. Lots of volunteers are needed to man the water stations, check in points and the runners’ progress.

Gift Wrap – Gift wrap is a major fundraiser for Chaparral PTA. Quality wrapping paper, gift bags and other items can be sold to students’ relatives, family, friends and neighbors. Orders arrive in time for the holidays. Proceeds from this fundraiser help to directly support our Music program.

Holiday Shop – Holiday Shop provides a safe environment for our children to shop for holiday gifts for their friends and family. Items are brought into school, where a “store” is created for children to shop on their own for gifts. This is an opportunity we like to bring back to the students at Chaparral.

Hospitality – This is an active group throughout the year providing hosting services for PTA events and activities. Perfect for parents who enjoy entertaining and hands on volunteer work while interacting with parents and staff. This position can easily be shared by 2 or more people!

Jog-A-Thon (Turkey Trot) – This event is our 2nd major fundraiser and designed to specifically raise funds to support our PE program as well as raise awareness for fitness and fun. Students solicit pledges for the number for laps they run, jog, or walk during the event - and 100% of the monies raised stay at Chaparral. (Proceeds from the jog-a-thon help to support our PE program.)

Kids Korps – Kids Korps USA is a national non-profit youth volunteer organization with a mission to instill in American’s youth the spirit of giving while providing valuable education in leadership, social responsibility and character development. Chaparral PTA’s chapter introduces our students to the enriching experience of community service by creating service project opportunities during school hours, primarily recess.

Library Helpers – Libraries are important to children throughout their formal education and beyond. You can make a real contribution to your child’s introduction to libraries by volunteering in the Chaparral library. Hours are flexible-come in on a regular basis, or twice a year during inventory and clean-up days.

Melody Makers – Melody Makers provides Chaparral students with an extra outlet for singing and performing as a group and individually. There are no try-outs, and any child (in grades K through 5) with a love of music is welcome. The Melody Makers strive to perform 2 concerts a year for family and friends.

Mentor Program – The Mentor Program matches community volunteers, parents, seniors, high school and college students with students that have been identified as needing extra support academically, socially or emotionally. The time commitment is once a week, for about 30 minutes.

Music Program – PTA financially sponsors the Music program at Chaparral by hiring a credentialed music teacher to come in each week and teach the children different songs and expose them to instruments. Our Music program is enjoyed by students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Olympic Field Day – Multicultural Olympic Field Day is a celebration of sports and cultural around the world. Each classroom is designated a country and students participate in fun field day activities to earn points for their country. This program relies on volunteers from the PTA, Chaparral Educational Foundation and Student Council.

PE – PTA financially sponsors Chaparral’s PE program by providing the funds to hire a PE teacher. This enables all children to be exposed to a variety of PE activities and while utilizing the “SPARKS” program to maintain and promote fitness at school. Children participate in PE twice a week.

Red Ribbon Week – Red Ribbon Week is a national PTA program designed to encourage a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Various activities are planned for the students to participate in throughout the week.

Reflections – As a National PTA program, Reflections offers students the opportunity to pursue artistic expression by creating works of art for fun and recognition in six areas: visual arts, music, photography, film/video production, dance choreography and literature. Entries, based on a given theme, are judged by a panel of local judges.

Room Parents – Room Parent volunteers are the primary link between teachers and parents; the home and the classroom. Room Parents coordinate the parents’ support of any seasonal parties, field trips, classroom projects, school-side events and any other activities the teachers may need help with. Room Parents are also the main classroom coordinators for the activities related to Teacher/Staff Appreciation Day in May.

School Pictures – School pictures are taken of each student and their class for the families to purchase twice a year (Fall & Spring) and for the school yearbook.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation – This is an opportunity to show our teachers and staff our appreciation for all they do for our children and the school. Activities include door decorations, a staff lunch and homemade gifts/letters/cards of appreciation from students and their families.

Yearbook – The school yearbook is a wonderful keepsake for students. The yearbook includes individual photos of students by class, as well as a collection of candid photos taken at field trips, school functions, and in the classroom.

5th Grade Promotion – 5th Grade Promotion is a special celebration for 5th graders and their families as the students leave Chaparral Elementary and prepare to enter middle school. Our promotion ceremony is held on the field at Chaparral.
