Volunteering
(2009-2010)

Please consider volunteering your time, knowledge and abilities with the students at Chaparral Elementary. Volunteer assistance in schools enriches the educational program, enhances supervision of students, and contributes to school safety while strengthening the schools’ relationships with parents and the school community.

As a first step, fill out the Volunteer Form in the Back-to-School packets if you are interested in volunteering. If there are certain volunteer opportunities with which you'd like to assist, please check them off and then drop off the completed form in the PTA Box in the office.  More detailed descriptions of all our volunteer opportunities can be found under the Program section of our school’s website.

MEGAN’s LAW BACKGROUND CHECK

If you have never volunteered before, there are two forms you will need to fill out.

The first form to complete is the Megan’s Law form in order to have a Federal/State background check.  This is a District policy for ALL volunteers.  If you have filled out this form in the past and filed it with Chaparral Elementary, you do not need to file another one.  You only need to fill out the form once.  If you have volunteered at another school in PUSD, please complete the Volunteer Site Transfer Request form and turn into the office for processing

The second form to complete is the Volunteer Code of Conduct.  Once you have filled out both forms, please submit them directly to the office.

For your convenience, we will be available at the following times and locations to process the LEVEL 1 clearance paperwork:

Thursday, August 27th ● one hour before the PTA Assoc. Mtg. (front entrance gates of school)

Friday, August 28th ● 8-10am (during picture day for volunteer badges.)

Wednesday, September 9th ● 10:15-11:15am (after room parent meeting)

Please be sure to bring a valid driver’s license/photo ID

If you already have a volunteer badge, please stop by the above times to receive the 2009-2010 sticker for the new school year.  If you cannot make it on any of the days above, please contact Jeanine Ramos at jeanineramos@cox.net.

TB SCREENING

All volunteers who work with students in any capacity are required by law to have a Tuberculin Test, which show proof of a negative TB test and is good for 4 years.  A copy of the test result must be on file at school before you can volunteer.  Please check the TB testing schedule for specific dates and various locations provided by the District.  PUSD will pay the fee for testing if you use one of our school sites listed on the TB testing schedule for your TB test.  Prior to going to one of the District’s testing locations, please be sure to obtain a signed TB Test Voucher (which can be picked up in the office) to prove that you are a Chaparral Volunteer.  You may also have the test performed at your personal physician’s office or local clinic.  Once you receive your test results, please provide the school office with a physician-signed statement affirming that you are free of active tuberculosis or have a negative skin test (PPD) within the past four years.

If you are unsure if you need to have your TB test redone, please contact Jeanine Ramos @ jeanineramos@cox.net or visit the office.

For our student’s safety, and yours, ALL volunteers at Chaparral Elementary are required to sign in on the Volunteer Binder in the school office each day you volunteer.  This helps us identify people on our campus, keep our children safe, and should there be an emergency, the office will be able to account for all persons on campus/field trips.  Thank you for remembering to do this.

Also, whenever you are on school grounds, we ask that you be sure to wear a name badge.  This helps our staff know who is supposed to be on campus and who is not.  Volunteer Badges are issued once you have had your background check and TB test.  Pictures for the volunteer badges, for both new volunteers and current volunteers who may have missed last year’s picture day, will be taken Friday, August 28th 8-9am (last names A-M) and 9-10am (last names L-Z).  Please be sure to use one of the temporary badges by the sign-in book in the Office if you volunteer irregularly or are just visiting.

Once you have been cleared for volunteering, your child’s classroom teacher will contact you.

Thank you for your consideration.  We are looking forward to seeing our many wonderful volunteers and meeting new friends!

Jeanine Ramos, 1st V.P. Volunteer Coordinator
